Islam and Muslims in Europe have become the subject of many debates about belonging and about national and supra-national notions of identity. These discussions are an important part of current identity politics, be it in exclusive or inclusive, in pluralist or purist narratives of Europe as a cultural, social or political entity. At this the debates about Muslims in Europe reveal important aspects of how Europe is understood, maintained and imagined today.

Anti-Muslim demonstrations have in 2014 taken German politicians by surprise and the Saxonian PEGIDA found ‘official’ followers in the UK and Denmark. What does this mean for Muslims who live in European countries? What are the ideas of Europe presented in anti-Muslim narratives? What do the counter-narratives tell us about the search for Europe?
Conflicting stories and narratives about the European continent, and different perspectives on its history present European and Muslim identities as either incompatible or portray Muslims as part of Europe’s past with fertile grounds for a common future. We can find them in internet blogs and web pages that connect Muslim initiatives and anti-Muslim movements in different European countries.
