These Lightning Talks will enlight different cultural perspectives on the digital sphere all over Europe.

Borders, it seems, are becoming ever more of a priority to decision makers in Europe, while rights based approaches are fading more and more into the backround; both domestically in terms of strengthening “Fortress Europe” and overseas, sometimes through international aid. Regardless of how it is framed, surveillance technologies and increased data collection play a key part in this move, to the detriment of privacy, dignity and integrity of those affected by EU-refugee policy.

It's not just a theory that the political system of the EU is lacking of transparency, that european citizens have troubles following european policy topics and that Brussels is a place far far away. Each of the projects presented in this lighting talk use their very own approach to tackle these problems. But there's one thing they all have in common – the demand: Let's talk about Europe!

This talk explores the critical role of digital culture in tackling current political challenges of the EU. By transcending national and linguistic boundaries, digital culture not only lays the foundations for a European public sphere, but also challenges traditional narratives of national identity. I am going to argue that such a top-down endeavour was doomed to fail. Still, political communication about the EU is happening online and it serves democratic ends.
