For the first time, there will be a music theme day at re:publica – the re:cord MusicDay. Big Data, streaming services, Open Source, and many other current topics will be discussed on May 7 as part of an individual sub-conference. Here are some first impressions from the schedule (and the link to ticket orders below).

The 1979 song “Video Killed the Radio Star” by The Buggles included the following lines: “Rewritten by machine and new technology / And now I understand the problems you can see.” The music industry has been influenced by techniques and technologies since its beginnings, the MP3 has become the enemy of record companies, and YouTube has already become the new MTV. In 2004, Tim Renner argued that the death of the music industry was night, but that its imminent demise wasn’t that bad after all. And a decade later, there are more ways of accessing music than ever before, see the numerous streaming services like SoundCloud, Spotify or Tape.tv for instance. Music and digital technology are closely connected; and artists and producers have long seen this potential as an opportunity.

That’s reason enough for us to organize the re:cord MusicDay during re:publica as a special focus day. Presented in cooperation with the XJAZZ Festival, the Reeperbahn Festival, all2gethernow and the Berlin Music Commission, the music day sub-conference will take place on May 7, sponsored by the Musicboard Berlin GmbH. The one-day event is intended as a mixture between a conference for the music industry within the digital society, and a networking event for local and international professionals. 

The main day of the sub-conference is May 7th, but there will be a warm-up event on Wednesday, May 6th – the “BMC Backstage – Music Meets Digital Culture” a networking format and reception held by the Berlin Music Commission. In addition, there will be numerous live concerts on Wednesday as well as Thursday night.

The topics of the sub-conference are varied: from Big Data to fingerprint files, from the mechanisms of the digital music infrastructure to open source music operating systems, there will be a wide range of different aspects presented within the re:cord MusicDay.
