Urban Places – Public Spaces

re:publica 2015
City Of The Future

Short thesis:

The commercialization of public space, the tensions between inhabitants and immigrants, resource shortages and the increasing inaffordability of living space are some of the core issues cities across the globe – from Johannesburg to Sao Paolo – but also across Europe, from Rotterdam, Munich to Madrid and Istanbul are facing.

Description:

A great example of the battle between reclaiming of public space and privatization is Madrid – whilst activities are breathing new cultural and political life into one of the central squares with the “El Campo de Cebada" initiative, the central metro station in Madrid has been named Vodafone Sol.

Who owns the city? Who creates the city and What is a good city? Three international discussions hosted by the Goethe-Institut and the Münchner Kammerspiele addressed these questions from February to March – we are going to continue the discussion at re:publica by bringing together participants from all three episodes of “Urban Places – Public Spaces” (www.goethe.de/urbanplaces) to discuss what role activities and artists play in shaping public space and urban futures, what means of digital and analogue intervention and collaboration is possible and necessary to scale local efforts to reclaim the city from the hands of investors and political elites.

This panel is hosted by Goethe-Institut und Münchner Kammerspiele.
