Impactful innovation does not always involve a microcontroller and a 3D printer. Sometimes, a few simple ingredients put together in a new way will lead to astonishing results. In this workshop, you will be introduced to a DIY phone charger from Uganda, using a 12V motorcycle battery, a block of wood and a few pieces of scrap metal. 

Some places in Uganda (and in other parts of the world) do not have access to electricity. While most people have phones, they often need to pay a fee in order to charge their phone in town. Motorcycles (called “boda boda” in Uganda) are a common transport vehicle. This project allows people to charge their phones using the battery from a motorcycle that is easier accessible than a charging shop. It also allows motorcycle drivers to earn some extra money.

Building this charger you will not only learn basic electronic and woodworking skills but also get to put your design thinking hat on as you will be asked to help improve the chargers design.
